Cotton, linen, silk or viscose?
If there's one thing I've learned on my hijab journey, it's the importance of the right material. It's not just about how the hijab looks - it's about the comfort, how it feels on the skin and how easy it is to style. In this blog post, we take a closer look at the different materials. Spoiler: I also have my personal favorite, but more on that later 😉
Cotton hijab: the uncomplicated choice
Cotton is such an all-rounder! 💛 It's super breathable and perfect for warm days. If you're someone who sweats easily, cotton is a really comfortable choice. Another plus point: it's easy to care for and can simply go in the washing machine without you having to worry about it losing its shape.
However, cotton really does use a lot of water in its production, which many people (rightly) criticize. With organic cotton, however, the water consumption is not quite as high, as natural forms of irrigation are used. For me, cotton is always perfect when I need a relaxed look that prioritizes comfort.
Linen hijab: Natural and light
Linen, oh linen! 🌾 This material just screams summer, lightness and natural style. Linen is antistatic, and the natural irregularities in the material ensure that your blood flow is stimulated. How crazy is that? What's more, bacteria and mold spores cannot grow on linen.
It's ideal for hot days because it lets the air through so well and still has an elegant touch. For those of you who love a minimalist, natural look, linen is simply unbeatable.
Linen is also great in winter, it keeps the body warm and you feel 'protected'. If you have no experience with linen, it may feel a little scratchy at first. However, this will change as the material warms up with your body heat and the fibers "break" with frequent wear (which is great!). So if you're looking for something durable and environmentally friendly, linen could be right up your street.
Silk hijab: the luxury among fabrics
Here comes my personal favorite: silk! 🌸 Silk is just pure magic for me. It's so incredibly soft, has this beautiful sheen and just feels amazing on the skin. A silk hijab can really enhance any outfit and make you feel like you're wearing something really special. What I also love is that silk adapts to the temperature, which means it's cooling in summer and warming in winter. It also smells very special.
Of course, luxury comes at a price - both financially and in terms of care. Silk requires a little more attention, washing by hand or at least very gently is a must. But hey, I'm happy to put up with it for that wow effect, because silk is also super stain-resistant, so you rarely have to wash it (and never iron it!). If wrinkles do appear: Just let it hang out in a damp place (like your bathroom). So if you're looking for that certain something, silk is definitely worth considering.
Viscose hijab: the style chameleon
Viscose is something of an all-rounder among materials. It feels super soft, has a great texture and drapes beautifully. Plus, viscose comes in so many colors and patterns - there really is something for everyone! Viscose hijabs are easy to style and give you the flexibility you might need for everyday wear. They also come very close to the 'chiffon' look that many hijabis who are used to polyester want.
The biggest downside is that although viscose is made from eucalyptus pulp, it requires a chemical process. There are therefore major differences between the various types of viscose. With our viscose linen jersey, you can be sure that it does not contain any harmful chemicals. And to be honest, with viscose you have a super versatile and quite affordable hijab for every day.
Your perfect hijab consists of...?
At the end of the day, it's all about what works best for you and your lifestyle. If you're looking for a luxurious, special hijab that will shine both in everyday life and on special occasions, then I highly recommend silk. It does require a little more care, but for me, nothing can beat that touch of elegance and softness.
For everyday wear, cotton and viscose are your best friends - they are comfortable, easy to care for and can be styled in a variety of ways. And if you like it natural and durable, linen is definitely worth a look.
I hope this little guide helps you find the perfect material for you. No matter which one you choose, remember that your hijab will make you shine and give you exactly the feeling you're looking for. 🌟
